No Horses on School Property, Back to Carpooling!
In Salt Lake City Utah, a high school senior, Melissa Evans, decided to ride her horse to school in order to save gas. The fast increase in gas has caused her to become creative and try a different way of transportation. Her junior friend, Chapa Stevenson, decided to join her and also jumped on her own horse for transportation. Hay is a lot cheaper than gas, and isn't it a good thing to see students track their expenses so early in their life. Maybe this can make us realize that driving is making our pockets lighter.
Unfortunately, the school staff did not want to have horses on school property. "I guess we have to go back to carpooling, when you have a car that gets 10 miles per gallon, you have to do something, " said Evans. She had to leave her horse in the high school animal laboratory during classtime.
After Hurricane Katrina, the gas prices have increased and the people in Utah have taken a different route to reduce their gas expenses. Some are finding jobs closer to home, others carpooling, and even some horseback riding to their destination.
Evans said, "It took hours to get to school, but hay is cheaper than gas." Her school is 30 miles from her home. Isn't that the least mileage we all use daily? Some like me drive over 30 miles a day. The only problem is, I don't own a horse.
